It’s Volunteers’ Week!
At Compton, we simply couldn’t continue our vital work without the help of our amazing 441 volunteers, who give up their time to ensure that our services can keep running. Whether it be assisting on Reception, driving around in the community picking up collection tins, providing a listening ear for our patients, or helping in our shops, our volunteers truly are extraordinary, and we’d like to take this opportunity to give a big thank you for all that they do.
One such extraordinary volunteer is Jean Johnson, who also happens to be our longest serving volunteer, having joined before our doors officially opened 40 years ago!
When Jean heard about the opening of Compton, she visited with a donation and was asked by the on duty matron whether she had time to volunteer. Jean said she could help with arranging flowers, and 40 years later she’s still volunteering with us! Within the past 40 years, Jean has filled roles including helping on the Inpatient Unit and on Reception.
On the 11th July 2017, Jean was invited to attend a ceremony in London to receive the Badge of the Order of Mercy (pictured below), an accolade given to those who provide extraordinary support to charities, as a result of her time volunteering with Compton.
“I never thought when I first walked through the door that I would still be here 40 years later, but the reason I have stayed for so long is because I enjoy the atmosphere and interacting with the patients, doctors and nurses. Even after all this time I still feel like I get so much out of volunteering.
“My most notable memory is of a gentleman who was a patient on the ward. He didn’t have any relatives so I talked to him for hours and kept him company. As I was leaving he took my hand and said: ‘Thank you. This is the first time in a long time I’ve felt safe.’ I just think it’s so lovely that we are able to make people feel that way.”
Jean currently spends much of her time with her family, including several grandchildren who she loves to entertain.
We cannot thank Jean enough for the amount of support that she gives to Compton.
We are really looking forward to holding our Volunteer Long Service Awards next week in our beautiful Compton Hall grounds, and being able to celebrate other special milestones and achievements of those who use their spare time to help others💛
