A Day in the Life of… A Compton Clinical Nurse Specialist

Over a series of blogs we will be introducing you to various members of staff from across the organisation and giving you an insight into their daily routines.

We’re starting with Samantha Baker, who is one of our Clinical Nurse Specialists based at the Lymphoedema clinic. Let’s get to know her a little better!

Hi! My name is Samantha and I have worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Compton since 2007. I’m based at the Lymphoedema clinic, which is one of the largest specialist Lymphoedema clinics in the UK.

My favourite things: My family, especially my little boy who is 6 and makes me laugh out loud every day.

My least favourite things: Sprouts!! I still hate them as an adult even though I know they are good for you and you should always eat at least 1 of your 5 a day.

A Typical Day

8:30am – we start at 8:30am, but most of us arrive earlier to have a cuppa and get a head start on the day. During this time we check emails, return telephone calls, finish notes from any home visits the day before, type letters for GPs or district nurses, make any referrals to other services, and set our equipment and rooms up, ready for the patients we will see that day.

9:00am – we have a patient report for 30 minutes, discussing our patients booked in for the day including their care and how best to help them with the management of their condition.

9:30am – 1pm – this is our morning clinic. During this time we assess new patients, review previous patients and offer a range of treatments to help with the management of lymphoedema.  The day can be very varied as we might be here at the out-patients clinic, set at The Cedars, or out within the community seeing patients within the home (if they are housebound, immobile or palliative).  We may also be out visiting patients at nursing homes or within hospitals, offering specialist advice. We also visit patients on the Inpatient Unit at Compton Hall.

1 – 1:30pm – we have lunch and another well earned cuppa!

1:30 – 2pm – this is our admin time, when we finish off any outstanding notes, triage incoming referrals and return telephone calls to patients and GP surgeries.

2 – 5pm – during our afternoon clinic, we repeat the same duties as the morning clinic before heading home and doing it all again the next day!
