Compton Care’s Coordination Centre Officially Opens

Compton Care today opened the doors of its multi-million-pound coordination centre which will enhance care and support for people living with an incurable illness across Wolverhampton and the Black Country.

The building, funded in part by a £1.6 million donation from members of the Transport & General Workers Union of the former Goodyear Tyre Plant and the rest from the Compton Care Charity, will enable Compton to better coordinate care and support services for local people diagnosed with incurable illnesses from one central location.

Rachel Overfield, Interim CEO and Director of Nursing and Supportive Care said: “This is an incredibly exciting phase of our Compton Care journey with the coordination centre helping us to provide extraordinary care to our patients and families.

“The centre will enable us to coordinate our services from one central point creating a more responsive service for our patients and their families, with the aim of also providing 24/7 advice and support for patients, carers and referrers.

“None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of the members of the Transport & General Workers Union Benevolent Fund and our own Compton charity. They are funding so much more than a building, they are funding the opportunity for local people who have been diagnosed with an incurable illness to access the extraordinary care, encouragement and support they need in order to live their best life possible. Words cannot express how grateful and appreciative we all are.”

When a person’s illness becomes incurable the focus turns to ensuring they, and those closest to them, achieve a good quality of life for as long as possible, which is where Compton can help. Our services are designed to help people live the best life possible for as long as possible. However sometimes navigating our services can be confusing and this is where the Care Coordination centre comes in.

Compton receives referrals from GPs, black country hospitals, district nursing teams and from families/patients themselves and once known to us the care coordination team will get to know the person and their family and what their needs are. It may be just a simple appointment is needed or it may be a more complex set of arrangements are required across a number of teams and possibly organisations. Clinical staff and other members of our multidisciplinary teams will be based within the centre to advise coordinators where necessary to ensure patients and family members are receiving the package of care they need.

That package of care will include access to several of Compton’s clinical, practical and emotional support services. Depending on need, the family may require short term intensive support, or move back and forth between care services over a longer period of time. The earlier a referral is made, the greater the breadth of support available to the patient and their family. The care package might also include signposting to other health and social care providers.

Once a family is under Compton’s care, that charity’s care coordinators will then become their first point of contact for any queries, questions or support. The care coordinators will also become the first point of contact for healthcare professionals.

Cyril Barrett, Chairman of the Transport & General Workers Union, said: “The 5//344 Transport General Workers Union (TGWU) charity fund has supported many projects for Compton Care since it was set up in 1985. All the ex-members have had families, friends, neighbours or work colleagues who have been supported by Compton and they were always treated with kindness, care and respect.

“Compton Care is a great charity and no words can express the thanks and gratitude of the ex-members, which is why we wanted to create this lasting legacy and fund this project for the benefit of the local community.

“Since the Goodyear factory finally closed its doors, the 5/344 TGWU Benevolent Fund Charity has supported more than 100 charity projects across Wolverhampton and the Black country, creating a proud living legacy to all of the people who have been members of the union fund. I hope they and their families today feel proud of this massive project they have helped to create in support of such a wonderful charity.”

Ros Keeton, Chairman of Compton’s Board of Trustees, added: “The Board and I are delighted to see the opening of the new Coordination Centre. This wonderful building not only secures the future of Compton Hall but gives us the platform from which to care for a greater number and diversity of patients.

“We will be able now to increase the complexity of who we care for and most importantly ensure their journey is smooth and coordinated. We are extremely grateful to all of our supporters who have made this possible.

The charity aims to continue to work and develop the service to ensure it delivers the best possible care and experiences for families living with incurable illnesses.
